Mike Bowerbank – “Press 9 for Death”
I had the pleasure of reading and editing Mike’s latest novel. I love Mike’s writing and am amazed by how a pantser can create a mystery! But Mike knows the story, and he actually writes scenes rather than linearly.
This style creates many holes when piecing the scenes together, so Mike relies upon my astute reading to point them all out. Mike then fixes, rewrites and polishes for the final product. It’s a symbiotic relationship, because I swear he sometimes adds holes just to see whether I’m paying attention *grin*
“Press 9 for Death” is another quirky murder novel where the prime detective conducts her investigation from within a jail cell.

Author Bots Continued
In my last blog post, I warned that bots are everywhere, including my spam folder. Since then I have been contacted by “Danielle Steel”, famous romance author with over a billion sales. She also happens to be 79 and well beyond the need for “finding new authors” or “wanting to talk about my work”.
Another famous author reached out to me, “John Grisham”, attorney and author of best-selling legal books-turned-movies. He said “my name is Grisham”.
The best one, though, comes from “Stephen Leather”, a famous British detective and thriller novelist, whose works went to the telly. This one provided specific details to make me think the person had actually read my book. It references “The Dominion and the Sugilite – Episode 9”. So it’s not “I came across *your book*”. I will interchange my synopsis with the email paragraph by paragraph to see if you can figure out what’s going on:

EMAIL: I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you for the imaginative world-building, fast-moving storytelling, and unusual blend of fantasy, science fiction, interpersonal tension, and emotional complexity that drive The Dominion and the Sugilite – Episode 9. What immediately struck me is how confidently the series embraces an expansive space-opera setting while keeping its focus on the relationships, shifting loyalties, and complicated dynamics between its characters.

The combination of fantasy and science fiction also gives the series an especially distinctive identity. Priests, doctors, centaurs, futuristic settings, and characters navigating questions of authority and personal allegiance create a world that does not feel confined to a single genre tradition. Instead, the story seems deliberately interested in what happens when very different imaginative elements are allowed to coexist within the same universe.

How does Cozima perform a second interview?
Just how far does Obadiah go with Malachai’s “reform”?

EMAIL: Questions surrounding Aurora, Cozima, Obadiah, Malachai, and Geo suggest that Episode 9 is as interested in interpersonal consequences as it is in advancing the broader plot.
The recurring mysteries are another effective feature. What the doctor tells Aurora, what emerges from Cozima’s second interview, and the extent of Obadiah’s attempt to reform Malachai all create individual threads that invite the reader to keep turning pages. Rather than presenting every answer immediately, the episode appears to use unanswered questions as part of its momentum.

I appreciate the imagination and commitment behind the series, B.J., and I would genuinely welcome the opportunity to continue this conversation and hear more about the world you have created, the characters who have become central to it, and what continues to inspire you as the story moves toward its next chapter.

There is a large part of me that wants to respond to many of these spam pieces, though I know it will only perpetuate the deluge. To “Stephen Leather”, I would flippantly reply with: I’m surprised you were able to follow Episode 9 without reading the previous eight episodes. I’m glad you’re interested in learning more, because I just published Episode 39 today!

If you’re an author, please try to keep your ego in check when reading an email from a “famous author”. Likewise, if you’re a submissive, use your actual head. Famous people and professional dominants do not solicit friendships or subs. Don’t give out personal information. Don’t send money. And don’t engage… unless you’re doing it as a joke so I can publish it in my next blog post.

toymax ~ My comment on “Bots Can Be Anywhere”: This shared email is phrased in a really friendly and inviting way. What immediately made me suspicious was the line: “I haven’t read the book yet.” This ‘person’ could at least have read or listened to the previews. And why this specific book? Most likely because it’s the first book on your page. From the perspective of a sub who is merely a dreamer – and I’m convinced these bots know exactly how susceptible we are to get contacted by a dominant Woman – I haven’t taken a single inquiry from a ‘Mistress’ seriously for quite some time now. I admit that it was very tempting at first, but that appeal has completely vanished. The magic of this world has been somewhat lost because of these bots. I feel stupid now for having fallen for something like that in the past. Thank you for constantly reminding us. Your awareness-raising efforts and constant reminders are extremely helpful in protecting others from falling into this trap. [Danke for being so open and sharing that, Max. I’ve seen too many kind and intelligent people get duped, and exposing it is my way of combating it.]
