Warning… entering cuteness territory!

Koki passed out candy in his “Champ” costume. He loved meeting the trick-or-treaters, and he was a favorite of theirs.

As he gets older, he’s learning to be better behaved, especially around Ledger… except and until he gets tired.  Then he’s at his worst, and he sniping and growling.  Ledger, to his credit, simply walks away or moves his head… and waits for intervention.  Koki then gets to go into his crate, where he promptly crashes.  He’s still gotta figure out how to crash outside of the crate.

Actually, he recently did, and it was adorable!  He crashed in his crate a few times, then came out.  He kept trying to lie down next to Ledge, who moved away.  Then Koki sprawled out about a foot from Ledge, and went to sleep!  His back legs were under the crate door, and he had a bad dream, which jerked his legs against the door.  He woke up and freaked out, causing more of himself to connect with the door, which freaked him out even more.  Happy to say the brave boy survived that vicious attack of the crate door!

“Rope Class” ~ Rain Temple

Rain Temple is a long-time rigger in Los Angeles. The class was designed to provide hands-on experience for newbie rope enthusiasts. I wasn’t feeling particularly well that day, and didn’t stay for the hands-on part, but I wish I had.

There are many different types of rope available for rigging. How do you choose? According to Rain, it should be based on outcome goals – what do you want to do? What type of rope bondage are you doing? Each rope has its own texture from rough to smooth. People with grass allergies should avoid jute or hemp rope–they also tend to be rougher than nylon or other synthetics. Nylon rope seems to be the most common, all purpose, rope.

Common thickness of rigging rope is generally around 6mm (about 1/4 inch).

One of the advantages of synthetic rope is that it can be washed.

So, once you’ve chosen your rope, what are you going to do with it?

∙ Negotiation. Rain was emphatic about the importance of making sure that everyone in a scene knew (and was on board with) what was happening, and that safewords had been agreed upon.
∙ What’s the goal? Sensuality? Punishment? Stimulation?
∙ Are there medical conditions, such as high/low blood pressure?
∙ Medical devices?
∙ Medications?
∙ Emergency contact?

Rain also talked about aftercare, which is a familiar BDSM theme, and what he called “pre-care.” Pre-care ties in with negotiation. It involves establishing a connection between the people in a rope scene. He also referred to an energy exchange that takes place when the connection is good.

What really impressed me was Rain’s emphasis on safety and comfort for rigger or rope bunny. Like, avoid ties that involve joints due to the risk of nerve damage. Thighs and shins are good; knees are not. He used a model to demonstrate simple ties.

Two other points of emphasis were hydration and hygiene – critical in any type of BDSM play involving restraint.

Rain also emphasized that in a high-noise environment, the use of alternate signals for safety are very important.

The class was a good introduction to rope play. I would definitely like to learn more about this topic from someone at Rain Temple’s level of expertise.

“A Story Worth Telling” ~ B.J. Frazier

This is the second time I attended this class – the first being DomCon LA last June. First, a disclaimer and some context.

I’m B.J. Frazier’s friend, editor, and occasional booth boy. I was in these classes as one of her assistants, but I would have gone anyway.

Second, B.J. Frazier is more than qualified to teach about writing. She is, after all, a former high school English teacher, and an award-winning author with more than 80 published works. She presents her material in an engaging way complete with cleverly conceived in-class assignments. Her class is designed to help writers get started and gain a path toward completion of whatever it is they’re writing.

This was an industry only class.

The LA version was in a smaller room with greater attendance than the NOLA version. In NOLA, we were in a large ballroom and the numbers were smaller, which makes sense because DomCon LA is a bigger event. But the size of the room was not ideal for the topic which would have benefitted greatly in a more intimate setting.

B.J. did her usual, excellent job of interacting with the class, presenting information in easy to digest pieces, and worked the room with enthusiasm. Participants had opportunities to share aspects of their work like personality traits of their main character(s), for example. As always, it was fun to hear what people had to say.

B.J. went to great lengths not to judge different approaches to writing. Her method involves detailed plot outlines and knowing the end of the story before ever writing a word. Personally, I’m more of what’s called a “pantser,” which is a writing method I prefer to call “stream of consciousness.” B.J. presented the pros and cons of BOTH versions – again no judgment. The impression she gave was that elements of both styles can work together to create a finished product.

Everyone who attended that class should have left the room with a clear idea of what they needed to do to get their writing project over the finish line, which was the point of the class, after all.

Thomas ~ Aww, thank you. I’m grateful to those participants who actually shared their in-class writings. And you did an admirable job filling in for sep’s performance of “what NOT to do” when writing dialogue!
