DomCon NOLA 2024 – Fourth Review

Satyr Hate

Many readers do not appreciate the mirth of Gaius/Outré from “The Dominion and the Sugilite” space opera.  This is disappointing to me because Gaius is so much fun to write.  While he may be annoying on the surface, he truly just wants to have fun–and that usually involves sex.

Rubbug sent me this gif last month that I had to share.  I’d love to join forces and end Satyr hate 🙂

By the way, if you missed the blog post where I introduced and voiced Gaius, you can find it here.  I recorded it to let you hear how Gaius sounds to me when I write him… and to hope change you from a hater to a lover.

Twitshitland on Tilt?

Almost daily but definitely multiple times per week, I go into Twitshitland and find at least one spam “request” DM.  They’re so obviously spam because: 1) They’re in a foreign language; and 2) they’re sent to oodles of people; sometimes in excess of 30.

I routinely “report” these, though I firmly suspect no one is managing the other end of that report system.  At first, the process automatically popped up a message asking if I also wanted to block the requester.  Lately, that option has disappeared.

My question–moot as it is–is, of all the algorithms within smedia, why do they not recognize this type of mass DM’ing?  On the flipside, some of these come with warnings that the content may contain inappropriate images… which, to me, should be a clear indicator to support spam.

The other disappointment (aside from receiving these messages) is that my reporting seems to have no effect because sometimes I receive three at a time.  I ask you to report the ones you get, too, in an attempt to quash this level of spam.  Perhaps if we band together to overload their system, it will somehow affect change.

Kinkmas Update

I received the edits from Thomas Antonson and have gone through them for my upcoming Christmas novel, “Mistletoe Bound”.  I have one more read-through/final edit to do before I will send it to Sally Bend, who has agreed to review it before its release.

The book is available for preorder everywhere.  However, if you purchase it from my site, you will get it a day ahead of the public.  You will receive a happy and kinky inbox message on Christmas Eve… where the rest of the world will have to wait until Christmas Day.

Don’t forget about you this holiday season, and preorder “Mistletoe Bound” today!

Here’s what you said after the last blog post.

Goddess Aroya ~ Wow!! It’s a great Article! I guess I have to retract my comment about not liking Dominant Men!  [As any politician knows, you are not required to retract anything. Simply modify your position with a qualifier: I don’t like *most* dominant men *grin* Seriously, I’m glad you loved the interview!]

sizeerrorprojection ~ 666… I was born with that tattooed on my head!  [haha; I don’t think you’re supposed to admit that, sep]

toymax ~ Thanks for another detailed review. My favorite parts are always Your interviews. I love reading how Your interviewees found who they are. You show us a part of the ‚real‘ person. I‘m grateful that they trust You enough to open up to You.  [I am honored that they do. I am glad that you enjoy the interviews, Max]

I‘ve read Goddess Aroya‘s text in Fetlife – it is indeed a beautiful and also a very personal text. She is able to captivate others – and I‘m of course not talking about being her playtoy here.  [Goddess Aroya has an incredible energy about her]

Thomas Antonson ~ I enjoyed being reminded of the fun places we visited and dined at while in NOLA. The highlight for me was the Mahogany Jazz Hall. Yes, it was close quarters, but it took me back to my childhood when my mother and father would take me to jazz clubs in cities we visited. The combo was first rate.  [Wow, how cool, Thomas!]

I found the interview with Goddess Aroya very enlightening, particularly her comparison of kink with the music industry. I think that’s something that people get wrong about sexwork in general. Sexwork has rules and involves consent. If you look at the entertainment industry and all of the sexual assault/abuse/harassment scandals that have come to light over the years, it’s obvious that kink is a much safer work environment. And, yet, as Goddess Aroya points out, kink is regarded as dirty — something that is unfairly applied to all sexwork. This is an important point and needs to be made more often.  [Couldn’t agree more!]

Multiperv ~ I get that people are somewhat squicked out about the idea of using someone else’s former chastity cage but I have a ‘hand me down’ that’s actually my most comfortable and favorite one. And I’m pretty sure my dick turned green for completely unrelated reasons. And I thought about having it fixed but you like green so….  [haha! I see both sides… and it wasn’t a requirement that people participate in the exchange, so those who wanted to, great. Those who didn’t, no problem]

Sorry the Spartans lost but I’m glad you got to see a great game rather than just be miserable as your team got trounced or something similar.  [Thank you. But for a couple of key errors, the Spartans dominated the game]

From sep’s impact play class review, I would think if you discussed kink aspects during the rests, or what they just felt, while stair stepping, the sub wouldn’t necessarily lose their head space. But yeah, I can see how pausing to talk about or fold some laundry might spoil the experience. [Yes, the classes often provide a different perspective or something to consider]

Regarding Goddess Aroya’s interview ~ “a stigma of devil and demon” I don’t know if that’s a common phrase, I think it’s a first for me, but it’s a great one. And a good point about the kink scene versus the music industry. Score another point for the deviants.  [It makes you wonder how these “stereotypes”/ideas/lies get started, by whom and for what purpose… but it’s good to know the truth]

Genesis used to work at The Chateau? I sessioned there, a handful or so of times, at multiple locations. I really doubt we were there at the same time, though maybe, but it’s still really cool to see it mentioned and have something of a connection.  [Small world!]

Another great interview and fun newsletter.  [It makes me happy that these blog posts are a source of something positive]

Send me your comments, and I’ll put them in the next blog post!

Stickers

A fellow vendor found these two stickers and brought them over to me, saying it was fate that they found a good home.  They made me smile, and I share them with you.  Thank you to (I believe) Nocturnal Manor, and I hope you make it to DomCon L.A… and I look forward to your feedback on the books!

Original Readers and an Early Review

I love meeting people, and there are tons of colorful people at DomCon.  One couple I met not only live close to me (Ohio) but the husband recognized my name and books from my first publisher!  I suppose that classifies him as an OR; though “original reader” doesn’t have quite the same prestige as OG *grin*

To me, though, titles don’t matter; it’s the person who wears it.  Getting to know them at DomCon, talking about kink, femdom, my books, etc., was a highlight for me.  More importantly, they are active kinksters in multiple counties, and travel frequently to Michigan.  And I look forward to continuing our friendship!

Don’t forget the feedback!  The books he bought were far more about hardcore femdom than hers.  She gets to look forward to my upcoming Christmas book.

Speaking of feedback… <–see what I did there?  🙂  I first met submissive ares when I relayed my ASL message to Ballerina Goddess, thanks to rubbug.  I wrote about that message in the first DomCon Review Post.  He sat in and participated when told to during my interview with Ballerina Goddess.

We shared some positive conversation on the last day of DomCon, and I suggested he purchase a book for his domina.  When he learned that I would sign it for her and attribute it to him, he asked which one I recommended, given the amount of time I had spent with her.

I must confess that I deferred to sep, who had taken two classes with Ballerina Goddess, and was the one who inspired me to seek the interview.  Sep did not hesitate in recommending “The Service Sub”.  As soon as he said it, I knew that was the perfect book for both of them.

It wasn’t long after DomCon that submissive ares emailed me that he had started the book and was capitvated by it, *and* was looking forward to learning about how to be a better sub.  Shortly after that, he left my first “DomCon” review on Goodreads.  I won’t spoil it for you and urge you to not only read the reviews for this book but also “like” them.

Unfortunately, the world of erotica, as wonderful as it may be, isn’t something that’s casually discussed in social circles.  That’s why writing reviews is so important.  The more of them, the bigger the impact they make.  Also, with the volume of books out there, reviews can sway potential readers.

So write reviews but also “like” and follow other readers in Goodreads.  Many thanks to submissive ares for taking the time to provide me with feedback and for writing a review!

Mistress Mia

Mistress Mia was the first person I “met” before I attended my first DomCon, which was NOLA 2022.  I think I was searching hashtags in Twitshitland–back when it was still acceptable to use hashtags–for anything related to the convention I felt compelled to attend.  I found Mistress Mia and DM’d her.

We shared a few messages where she welcomed me to DomCon and told me how to find her… something about “just look up” because she’s a “6’3” black woman” [190.5 cm].  We had plans to do an interview at the conference, but it took place online afterwards.  If you missed that interview or want a refresher, see this blog post.

Mistress Mia is a rare mix of gregarious energy, positivity, warm understanding, and a helluva ferocious domme.  I’ve felt welcomed by her every time I see her, and that welcome extends to my booth boys as well.  That sadistic side of her came out in spades at a DomCon L.A. play party.  You can find that blog post if you search the archives in June of 2024.

In NOLA, she proudly told me that she had gotten a new wooden paddle, whom she named Agatha.  She was excited to give Agatha a test run, though she lamented that the paddle was of such great quality, she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to break it.  <–it’s doubly funny because during a particularly harsh strike in L.A., a splinter of one of her implements broke off and flew across the room.

While I interviewed Goddess Severa in the hallway outside of the vending area, there was some competition taking place at center stage.  All I knew at that time was something loud was happening, some singing perhaps, and it was booming into the hallway.  I closed the vending room doors, so I could better conduct my interview.

I later found out that the big booming noise was Mistress Mia herself.  She’s loud on her own, but give her a microphone, and watch out!  🙂  It made me laugh to know she was behind the volume.  But it made my heart melt to also learn that during that competition that she was MC’ing, Mistress Mia had given me a shoutout, sending people to my booth.

Tons of love and respect for the amazing Mistress Mia, whom I’m proud to call a friend.  I give her to you in a short shoutout she recorded:

1 of 3 Booth Boys by servicepet

I felt like I was more like the Booth Boy mascot than the actual Booth Boy. Sep was the one who was really getting things done. He knew the mechanics and could talk about all of the books. And then Thomas was quite the talker and could reel ‘em in. Unless everybody was gone, I was just giving morale support and being like the spokesmodel.

It was a lot of fun on a coupla levels. One, being with B.J., and being viewed as a Booth Boy. And because of who she is and what she does, it was fun meeting all the people. The group social interactions amongst the Booth Boys and B.J. was a tremendous amount of fun with laughing. And it made for long days, which was nice.

And as you know, with someone with a service orientation, it felt nice to have that place to be, that something to do instead of just being on my own and going to classes and that sort of thing. I noticed that about submissives and service type submissives that they tend to be socially awkward. Having a task or something to do in a social situation makes things a lot easier. And I fit into that category.

I’ve already booked my calendar for June 4-8 for DomCon L.A.

To servicepet ~ You definitely made the booth more fashionable! I don’t perceive you as socially awkward at all. You rounded out our foursome with the right balance of conversation, wisdom and wit, and I can’t wait for L.A.!

Classes

Tapping into your sub energy – The Kink Consultant ~ by sizeerrorprojection

The class started for each student as we entered the room. The Kink Consultant had a large list of adjectives on the screen. We were each asked to pick three that described us and two that were definitely NOT us. I picked Reliable, Hard-Working, Adventurous for me, and Gregarious and Profound for NOT me. She told us to use the chosen words to guide you on your path to submission, whereas the words we were not will tend to humble you.

The Kink Consultant was a pro domme in NYC but now is a kink-friendly counselor. She has a presence on Twitter and TikTok. She is a switch, but has spent periods of time as domme or as submissive. She knew she was kinky and enjoyed dominating boys from when she first had thoughts. She requires an emotional connection in her power dynamics, which is felt in her gut. She asked us… “Where do you feel your emotional connections?” I feel mine in my heart.

The Kink Consultant feels that everyone has dominant and submissive energy, and that one becomes the energy that one decides to “lean into”. Several reasons to be submissive: (1) Born that way; (2), Partner wants me to; (3) Just want to dabble in kink; and/or (4) it feels freeing to be released from decision making.

To tap into your energy, The Kink Consultant recommends isolating yourself first. She warned against “monkey mind” messing with you by listing our appearance and questioning whether you should submit to a specific person, because it could deter us from our path. Instead, she said to isolate ourself from these types of thoughts, and also from how our family and friends might feel. We should accept these thoughts and flush them out, once we separate them from ourselves, so we can move forward on our submissive mission. Flushing these thoughts puts us on the path to acceptance of our submission.

How do you focus your pace and energy as a submissive?

This depends on whether you are just involved in scenes or have a 24/7 dynamic. It is key to understanding what you want and to go after it. Don’t say I want this but I’ll settle for that. Be aware of what you want and pursue it. Self awareness is key for the submissive. You cannot pour from an empty cup and should not push yourself into an unhealthy way of life. Do not be ashamed of not being in a 24/7 dynamic if that’s the path you choose.

In your dynamic, scene or 24/7, The Kink Consultant says, “The domme is responsible to make a safe space to be submissive in. The rest is up to the sub to find their head space.” I would add it is also up to the sub to communicate what helps them get into their head space. Maybe that’s part of “the rest”.

Vetting

Look for a domme who asks about your previous experience. You should ask them about their previous experience as well. Go over safewords. If they say they don’t use safewords, leave. It’s natural to want to believe the good in a person, but it’s more important when vetting to recognize red flags. Sometimes potential partners are not honest with themselves about what they want. They may truly believe they are being honest with you. Public environments are recommended at first to build your vetting skill set safely.

The Kink Consultant and the class came up with types of red flags:

~ Do they know what kind of dominant they are or are they unable to explain
~ Do they get into dirty talk right away
~ Do they feel too good to be true
~ Do they talk poorly about others in the scene
~ Are their desires consistent or constantly changing during your discussion
~ Do they say, “Call me Master” before you’ve entered into a dynamic
~ If you say something about yourself, and they respond by telling you who you are
~ They mention the number of years of experience they have
~ They demand money immediately
~ Are they treating you like a kink dispenser

I personally am unsure about the number of years one, but, if someone is bragging, I’d be concerned.

Scene vs Romantic Partner

Be aware of what you are looking for and do not confuse the two. Scenes are for kinky partners. Hang onto that thought and don’t fall in love. If you do fall in love, communicate your feelings. If it doesn’t go the way you want, step away for a bit so you can still scene together once those emotions have calmed down.

Share your ideas with your domme; they are not the keeper of all knowledge.

The Kink Consultant identifies as a brat, and we broke into a discussion of how to deal with them in the class. As the submissive, you need to understand where your brattiness is coming from. Are you struggling with being submissive or are you just trying to be witty? You need to be able to communicate with your domme about this. If you meet resistance to your brattiness, ask your domme where their resistance is coming from. How is your brattiness making them feel? As in all things kink… communicate.

Scenes

Start by discussing what you enjoy that helps you get into subspace. Communicate how you are feeling right now. Explain if you need a warmup before you start with impact play. Don’t push yourself too far by taking more than you can handle.

Remember why you are engaged in this type of play during the scene. Ask yourself if you are getting what you want? Should you have called yellow? Question yourself and hold the information for when you discuss it after the scene. Prepare for your scenes by altering your diet if you feel the need. Don’t do drugs or alcohol. You need to stay aware during the scene, aware of your needs and your emotional and physical feelings. Don’t let your fantasy get the best of you.

If you’re not feeling it, work with your domme on a protocol to help you get into your sub energy. When you get sick, ask for support. It’s okay to be a submissive and have needs. Take a day off when you need to. If you experience sub drop at any time, remind yourself of the things you do well. Sub drop can be brutal and cause you to spiral into a morass of self-criticism.

The Kink Consultant ended with a brief description of her services. She helps people introduce kink to their partners. She helps you learn what is behind your kinks so that you can communicate why you want what you want. She offers relationship counseling.

To sep ~ Thanks for a great write-up. I think much of this information will be helpful to our community.

Additionally, I have experience with kink and relationship coaching, and I am taking a course that encompasses many aspects.  In fact, I have already earned several certificates.  Earlier this year, I posted three letters of recommendation.  You can find one in each of the following blog posts.

Interview with Goddess Severa ~ Edited by Goddess Severa

Background

There’s no way to avoid seeing Goddess Severa because She’s 6’5” and stunningly beautiful. Her images, videos and interviews have appeared on dozens of media sites over the 25 years She’s been a professional Dominatrix. But images don’t tell nearly the whole story. She’s also an athlete—professional basketball in Europe and Australia, a black belt in competitive Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and an accomplished painter with an MFA and an entirely separate private life.

She grew up as a smart, nerdy bookworm and crafter who noted to me wryly that one should “never underestimate the power of needlepoint and reading.” But the very gender-specific career advice She got from the adults in Her life—to become a librarian, teacher, nurse or occupational therapist—didn’t excite Her. Instead, She earned a college degree in criminology, and found Her best friend for life in a “Serial Homicide” class.

Becoming a Dominatrix

The Goddess realized She was kinky very early on, when She saw the image of a woman spanking a bare bum in a classic children’s poem called There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe. Whether or not you think “there’s something a little bit off” about kink, Goddess Severa relates that, for Her, “being kinky isn’t a matter of choice, it is who I am; it’s my inescapable identity.” No doubt “it’s easier to be vanilla because it’s enough by itself.” She describes the misperceptions some people have about this in Her industry only class.

Her journey to become a Dominatrix began while She was on the national basketball team training for the Olympics. A minor Hollywood producer of Amazon fetish content in Los Angeles, flew Her down and convinced the 18-year-old that She had star power and that he “could get Her into movies”. He assured Her that his interest was strictly “paternal”, but Her dreams came crashing down when it became clear that he had lied: after quitting the national team and giving up a contract overseas, he said that he wanted a sexual relationship after all, and made their future work together contingent upon Her compliance. She rejected the unholy alliance and was emotionally bereft.

She had given up Her future in sports. Luckily, a former teammate of Hers from college was playing basketball in Germany and found Her a position on the team. From there, Her professional athletic career took off, and She got contracts to play in Australia and Switzerland. Injuries eventually led Her to retire, but She stayed in Germany, exploring its culture and teaching English. Just as She was growing restless, She received a call inviting Her to be on the Maury Povich TV show, “Opposite Attractions” in New York City. She accepted the invitation and let the audience know that she did, indeed, find short men appealing.

Thus began another life adventure. After the show, She decided to stay in the City but needed a job right away. Potential employers wondered why, after the fun of playing basketball, She wanted to work in the depressing field of criminology. She agreed, it wasn’t for Her.

So, she flipped through the Yellow Pages and saw an ad for the Taurel Institute, an upscale retreat for those seeking to be dominated or to explore their deepest fetishes and fantasies. When She called, Ava Taurel told Her there were no openings, to which the soon-to-be Goddess Severa replied, “Did I mention I’m 6’5”?” Hired instantly. Ava Taurel and Head Mistress Tara Indiana of The Den of Iniquity mentored Her so well that, after three years, She felt confident enough to go out on Her own.

Goddess Severa—The Dominatrix

Goddess Severa has evolved into a mindful and skilled Dominatrix whose intuitiveness enables Her playmates to achieve the most fulfilling experiences possible based on their fantasies. She recognizes and respects the fact that fantasies make people happier, especially in dark times. “And it’s a very necessary thing to do–make positive change, one person at a time. It’s what I try my best to do.”

Goddess Severa’s favorite play dates involve roleplay and connecting deeply with Her playmates. She tries to accommodate many different pathways to the satisfaction Her subs are seeking. There are some roleplay clips on Her website that highlight Her quiet, firm but playful demeanor. The site has run since 1999 and features new content every week.

If you’re inspired to meet Goddess Severa, simply introduce yourself on Her site’s Meeting Form. She asks pointed questions and encourages potential playmates to be as forthcoming as possible.

Goddess Severa—The Artist

Goddess Severa is an accomplished oil painter. She only began taking classes after she settled in New York and returned to university. She was moved by Philip Guston and California Bay artists of the 1950s who “used paint in such a luscious way.”

When asked if there was one piece of art that She would like to own, Goddess Severa didn’t hesitate: a large “abstract painting of horse hooves and a flurry of activity with painterly brush marks and very thickly applied paint,” by Her favorite artist, Susan Rothenberg. You can see Rothenberg’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The Goddess aspires to create work that deepens our understanding of the ways in which certain personal meanings reflect the complex matrix of universally shared emotions. Salman Rushdie offers the best explanation for this approach:

People do not perceive things whole, we are not gods but wounded creatures, cracked lenses, capable only of fractured perceptions….Meaning is a shaky edifice we build out of scraps, dogmas, childhood injuries….

GoddessSevera—Fun Facts

With 30 minutes of free time, Goddess Severa would read John Fante’s novel, Ask the Dust.

The last show Goddess Severa binge-watched was Hacks.

Closing Remarks

“You have to fight yourself at every turn, so that you’re not repetitive or taking an easy solution,” said Susan Rothenberg in a 2005 interview with Art21, speaking of painting and art generally. But the words remind me of Goddess Severa, who has maintained a media presence for decades with new and fresh content. She continually reimagines Herself.

Goddess Severa has learned the hard way about the necessity of boundaries, and, most importantly, it’s not what people do to you, but what you allow them to do to you.

Goddess Severa is beautiful, tall and athletic, with intelligence, competence, and business acumen. She is quiet-spoken, warm, inviting, giving, and shy. She is a unique and sublime mix of dominance, sweetness, beauty and tenacity.

If you’d like to know more, visit Her website and introduce yourself.

To Goddess Severa ~ I am honored to have met You and gotten to know You.  I admire You tremendously and look forward to beginning a friendship.  Ever the feedback whore, I eagerly await Your comments on “Eli”.  Should You finish before December 7, my next Online Book Club will be discussing the last book in the “Eli” series, “Triumph”.  Jessie Spectre, my co-author, will also be there, and You can ask questions of us and/or the characters.

Question: Do you feel extra proud when one of your books like the Eli or D/s series does particularly well when it’s not – or at least before now – hasn’t been part of your ‘core competency’ (straight Fm femdom erotica)? Or are they more all equal children in your eyes?

B.J.’s Answer:  Thanks for the question.  I have several responses.  First, yes, they are all my babies.  When I am in the writing phase of a new book, I tend to get pumped and feel emotionally connected and declare it to be the best book ever!

Do I feel extra proud of reviews for the books that aren’t my “core competency”?  Difficult to say.  I’m proud, for sure, whenever I receive a positive review.  But I’m not sure I can say “more so”.  Several of my books include elements that are outside of Fm scenes, just like there’s more than one flavor of kink.  I write to the story, and sometimes the characters help me with their paths.

As for “The Dominion and the Sugilite” or “D/s”, the heart of that space opera is femdom.  It branches outside of that–and even dips into maledom at times–but its world is female led with a female political system.  The reviews have been extremely positive, and I’m having a lot of fun writing it.

I would like to see more readers getting into the series… and more reviews… and hopefully an award in the future  🙂

Official Certificate
Eli’s Silver Medal… it’s heavy!

All the caveats aside, the “Eli” series is special for several reasons.  It’s the first collaboration I did.  Jessie Spectre is my co-author, and he made the process fun, intellectual and amusing.  I’ve spoken a lot about how lucky I am to have had such an amazing collaborative process–and we’re both eager to do another project whenever that four-letter word “life” slows down.

Plus, we won the Silver Medal in Erotica at the IPPY Awards this year.  The pride with that acknowledgment is huge; not only did it win an award, but it won in the general category of erotica, not just gay erotica.  To have an independent judging committee–who had thousands of entries–single it out to that high of a level is an incredible feeling.

Speaking of Eli, the final book in the five-part series is the next book we will discuss at the Online Book Club on December 7 at 4p Eastern.  Jessie will be there, and you can ask questions of us as well as the characters.  We look forward to rounding out these fabulously insightful discussions.  If you’d like to participate, please DM me.

Do you have a kinky question you’d like answered?  Use the contact form to submit your question.  All questions will be kept anonymous unless you’d prefer to be named.

Happy reading,
